The Granite Mann Challenge, organised by The Children’s Centre and sponsored by Browne Craine & Co is the only off-road triathlon in the Isle of Man in which participants can take part either as an individual or as a team.
Competitors “enjoyed” a 400 metre swim in the reservoir, followed by a 10 kilometre mountain bike ride using the trails around the plantation with the final element being a five kilometre scenic trail run using the tracks in the plantation.
The 2021 Granite Mann winners were:
- Men’s Triathlon Solo: William Draper – winning male for the fifth year running;
- Ladies Triathlon Solo: Ellen Barker;
- Men’s Triathlon Team: The Spice Boys (Ryan Fairclough/Andy Bass/Ryan Fairclough);
- Mixed Triathlon Team: ACA (Ali Neuwirt/Tim Woakes/Conor Caley);
- Ladies Duathlon Solo: Emma Atkinson; second year running
- Men’s Duathlon Solo: Nigel Beattie;

This year spot prizes were introduced with David Gibson, Diane Motley, Team Melon (Alex Graham/Alex Graham/Hollie Mills) and ATLA Front (Daniel Foulis/Rachel Gregson) all receiving a prize.
“Congratulations to all the competitors who took part,” said Basil Bielich, director in Browne Craine & Co. “This year’s event was Browne Craine’s third year of sponsoring Granite Mann and it was great to see so many competitors taking on the challenge of the course which is no mean feat!
“It was a pleasure to again hand out the awards to the worthy winners and also the new spot prizes for individuals and teams who we felt deserved special recognition. I’d also like to say well done to Jane, Sharon and the rest of The Children’s Centre team for organising a great event. We are already looking forward to next year!”
Browne Craine decided to get involved and support the event because it helps raise money for a fantastic local charity and its staff regularly take part in events which are organised by The Children’s Centre.
“We were so lucky with the day, I would even wager we had the perfect weather for an off-road triathlon.” said Joff Whitten, Head of The Children’s Centre. “Not too cold to start with, a little bit of rain to get used to the lake swim followed by the clouds clearing and some lovely autumn sun to warm those who took part and came to watch.
“Our events raise money so we can help families in need living on the island. As a completely independent Manx charity we have to raise all the funds we need to do the vital work we do with children, young people and families. This year alone we have worked directly with 600 individuals who are struggling, not fitting in, not able to access services anywhere else.
“Granite Mann has raised us nearly £8000 – this pays for over 59 sessions working directly with a young person unable to attend school. We are tremendously grateful to Browne Craine for sponsoring this event, without this sponsorship we couldn’t raise the money we do. A big thank you also to Gav and the Bikestyle team for once again supporting our event, and providing all the prizes.
“We are in awe and incredibly grateful to all those who took part. I might (might!) give it a go myself next year.”
