Manx Blind Welfare Society is delighted to announce the return of the Coast to Coast Walk, with the support of brand new sponsor Manx Telecom for this year’s event.
Taking place on Sunday 6th September, participants will walk from Douglas to Peel via the Heritage Trail, with an alternative shorter route commencing at St John’s. For the first time, the event will start at the NSC and begin with a lap of the outside track before walkers make their way onto the Heritage Trail, and finish in front of the House of Manannan in Peel.
The popular community event offers participants the opportunity to enjoy the Isle of Man’s beautiful scenery while showing their support for the Island’s blind and visually impaired community.
The walk, which is approximately 12 miles long, will start at 1:30pm with check-in from 12:00pm at the NSC. Check-in for the shorter three-mile route will open at 2:45pm at St John’s School car park, with walkers expected to set off at 3.30pm.
Society Volunteers Coordinator and Events Organiser, Debbie Thomson, says the team is hoping for a record-breaking number of entries and fundraising total this year, following the success of the 2019 event which attracted more than 350 participants and raised over £4,000.
Debbie said: ‘We’re excited to bring this family-friendly event back for another year, especially considering things were touch-and-go for a while with all the uncertainty surrounding Covid-19. At one point it was looking unlikely it could go ahead, which would have had a major impact on our 2020 fundraising efforts, so we’re delighted to welcome it back once again.
‘We’re thrilled to welcome Manx Telecom on board as the event sponsor. Its support has already been invaluable in ensuring the event can go ahead and we’re really grateful.
‘Inclusivity is one of our most important values and is something we try to incorporate into everything we do, which is why we wanted to make this event suitable for all ages and abilities. It’s a really stunning walk and, as the Heritage Trail winds its way along, walkers will have the opportunity to savour stunning countryside views. There will be marshals placed along the route to direct and offer support to participants, as well as water stations to keep everyone hydrated!’
Cathy Collins, Marketing Communications Manager at Manx Telecom, added: ‘We are delighted to be able to help the Manx Blind Welfare Society stage the Coast to Coast Walk this year, especially as the Parish Walk, which we have sponsored for many years, was unable to take place. The Society provides valuable and much-loved services for the Island’s visually impaired community and the Coast to Coast Walk is a brilliant way of raising funds to support this essential work whilst enjoying a day in the beautiful Manx countryside.’
