Scallop prices 50 per cent down on last year

Fishermen urge review of bag limits

Scallop fishermen say the current state of the market, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, means they are only getting half the price for their catch that they received last year.

The fishermen are urging DEFA Minister, Geoffrey Boot to lift the bag limits put in place for the start of the season earlier this week.

The Minister says he is aware of the situation, and has promised to review it within the next two weeks. But he stressed the importance of not depleting stocks of the shellfish, which would have long-term consequences.

The current catch limit for the season has been set at 557 tonnes.
