Flight Attendant is UK’s most sought after job, despite travel standstill

  • Flight Attendant/ Cabin Crew is most sought after UK job, despite low average salary and few jobs
  • Events positions also highly sought-after, following Covid-19 related industry collapse
  • Bicycle Courier is 26th on list as Covid-19 causes home delivery boom
  • Private Chef is 3rd most sought after role, Head Pastry Chef is 18th most sought-after
  • Creative jobs including Make-Up Artist, Blogger & Digital Graphic Designer in demand

Flight Attendants, Bloggers and Bicycle Couriers are three of the most sought after jobs of the moment, according to new research from job search engine Adzuna.

The research analysed Adzuna’s 600,000+ open job adverts by looking into the job titles with the highest click rates (calculated as clicks/ads) in November 2020 to reveal the 30 most in demand job roles across the UK.

Flight AttendantCabin Crew is the most sought after job in the UK, with an average click/ad rate of 24.1 across just 14 job ads. Demand for these jobs has been pushed up as the pandemic has created high redundancies across airlines, with UK-based airlines British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and EasyJet cutting over 16,600 jobs between them.* The average advertised salary for a Flight Attendant is just £19,893, but this isn’t putting off the 1000s of recently laid-off flight crew competing for the limited number of available jobs.

Similarly, Events Executive – another of the jobs most affected by the pandemic – is one of the top sought after roles, coming in at 8th with an average click/ad rate of 13.1 across just 30 job ads. Events Manager also features at 23rd, with an average click/ad rate of 9.0 across 154 job ads. The events industry has been severely impacted by the pandemic with over 7,400 redundancies across theatre and live events, according to creative union Bectu.

Encouragingly, not all of the most sought after jobs are in industries experiencing redundancy pain. Bicycle Courier positions feature 26th, with an average click/ad rate of 8.6, and 2,352 positions available. This role has soared in popularity over the last year as the pandemic has driven up demand for home-deliveries and takeaway services. The role also offers flexible options for workers to earn extra cash around other employment.

Overall, Door Supervisor positions, security roles at venues such as bars, clubs and restaurants, are the second most sought after positions, with an average click/ad rate of 21.7 and advertised salaries of £20,002.

The job role with the third highest click/ad rate of 19.9 is Private Chef, where advertised salaries average £30,018. Head Pastry Chef also features on the list at 18th, revealing Britain as a nation of food-lovers.

Creative roles in high demand

Creative roles feature prominently on the list of most sought after UK jobs, as the pandemic pushed more Brits to seek creatively fulfilling careers. Make-up Artist has the 9th highest click/ad rate at 12.5, Digital Graphic Designer is 10th at 12.2, and Blogger is 11th on the list at 11.5 despite just 24 Blogger roles being available.

Other jobs that have become popular over the last year include Activism Officer(19th, 9.6) and NHS Administrator (28th, 8.4), reflecting a growing spotlight on Diversity & Inclusion and environmental activism, as well as the critical year for the NHS.

The highest paid role featuring on the top 30 list is Chief Operating Officer, where advertised salaries average £68,174, and 155 roles available. This is followed by Head of Retail at £53,518 and 30 roles available. Overall, 25 of the 30 most sought after UK jobs offer lower remuneration than the current average advertised UK salary of £36,903, showing money isn’t everything when it comes to filling a role.

Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, comments: “Jobs in the Airline and Event industries are like hen’s teeth at the moment and we’re seeing massive interest from jobseekers whenever these positions come up, reflecting recent redundancies in these sectors. Creative jobs like Blogger roles and Digital Graphic Designer openings are also proving popular, as many workers have chosen to pursue creative fulfillment during the pandemic. And Gig jobs like Bicycle Couriers are highly sought after as many workers look to top up their income in a tight financial climate.

“The research also shows pay doesn’t mean popularity when it comes to job adverts. 25 of the top 30 most sought after jobs offer lower salaries than the UK average, showing many jobseekers are looking for more than just money when seeking a new role.”
